Vertical Positioning for Horizontal Purpose
In my book, Dancing on the Waters…Stepping Out of the Boat, available at the Aglow Store, a devotional to develop deep conversations with God, I came across a two-way conversation with the Lord about how I desired to climb higher in my understanding of how He sees me. I want to share my conversation with Him followed by His reply. Before you read this discourse, can you answer these questions?
- How should you respond when confronting difficult circumstances? Do you deal with them on a horizontal plane or on a vertical climb? What is the difference?
- What are the three key action verbs in Philippians 3:12-14 that can help you live an ascended lifestyle rather than a horizontal existence?
Newer Heights of Understanding
Father, I pray that You will be the exceedingly “beyond thinking” factor in my life right now (Ephesians 3:20). There is such a hidden passion unbridled in me. You created me with a specific identity to fulfill.
When I feel overwhelmed, be my refuge and hiding place. You are the Keeper, my Shepherd, and the Protector of Your own. Show me what is missing in my relationship with You. Help me forgive myself for all the mistakes of the past. It is a new day. Elevate me higher into an ascended lifestyle of knowing You as Savior and Friend. Everything is in Your hands, and I am learning to rest in my position in You. Renew my thinking with the thoughts that You are having about me and destroy the reproach of my past.
You chose me, Father. Replace my dead-end revelations with the resurrection power of the new life. Teach me to embrace my newness of life. Bring me into relationship with You so we can work together on areas of my life not working. I gladly lay aside the old self and renew my mind to focus on who I really am—a new creation in You. Bring my mind into agreement with Yours. It is a progressive learning experience that I may become the embodiment of Your every thought toward me.
Teach me Your righteousness in this place. I enter this beautiful place of exploration and discovery as You determine every step for me. I rest in Your faithfulness to accomplish this in me, and I come into agreement that this is the first day of my new life.
And the Father answers:
Grab the New
Enjoy this eternal process where the richness of your life exceeds all expectations. You are made rich by being made new. Everything else will become life-draining to you. Only the new life begets a new life. This is the new place of My life-giving waters.
New, new, new…you have entered through the door of this newest and most rewarding season of revival. YOU are that revival. The old cannot survive the altitude of higher thinking. I have opened the door separating the old from the new. Do not worry about how to discard the old; it will die for lack of oxygen in the higher elevations I AM taking you. The newness of My life will ground all heaviness and gravitational pulls of the old. I AM propelling you like an Apollo spacecraft into the higher atmosphere where it must discard the extra weight that got it there.
In the higher elevations, yesterday’s anointing cannot serve today’s purpose. You absorb the new through a change in the elevated atmosphere you have entered rather than by looking for ways to modify your behaviors. To come up higher means coming into agreement with how I see you, then stepping into the behaviors associated with it. The old self can navigate only on a horizontal plane. The new self, by contrast, is designed to develop through your vertical placement in Christ. You cannot go any higher than the heavenly places with Christ Jesus.
I call you higher than you have ever gone. How do you do this? Follow the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. To paraphrase Paul: “Just press on so that you may lay hold of that for which I have for you. Lay hold of Christ. Do not regard yourself as having laid hold of it yet; but do one thing: Forget what lies behind, reach forward to what lies ahead, and press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call I have for you in Christ Jesus.”
The sequence to come up higher is simple: Forget your past, reach forward, and grab onto your identity. Then press in to the purpose I have for you in this lifetime. Come up higher and soar in the heights of My best for you.
